Early Signs of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that often leads to full or partial loss of vision. It can usually be detected early on with a non-invasive eye exam with us at Miller Optometry in Yucaipa, CA. An eye doctor on our optometry team is here to help.

Two Types of Glaucoma

There are two main types of glaucoma:

Open-angle Glaucoma

In open-angle glaucoma, the angle between the cornea and the iris is correct, but the drainage channels in the eye are partially blocked. This causes a slow build-up of pressure.

Angle-closure Glaucoma

This type of glaucoma is less common, but more severe. It occurs when the angle between the iris and the cornea is narrow and closed, which can block the drainage of fluid from the eye and cause a rapid increase in pressure. This type tends to be more of an emergency as the onset of symptoms is faster.

Both types can be treated by an eye doctor on our team. Some types of glaucoma may be be treated with medications, such as eye drops or pills, or with surgery to improve the drainage of fluid from the eye. We can help refer you out to an eye surgeon for glaucoma surgery.

Early Signs of Glaucoma

Early warning signs of glaucoma to look for include:

Increased Pressure in the Eye

The most common early sign of glaucoma is increased pressure in the eye, also known as intraocular pressure.

Loss of Peripheral Vision

Glaucoma can cause a gradual loss of peripheral vision, which may not be noticeable until significant damage has occurred.

Halos Around Lights

Some people with glaucoma may notice halos or circles around lights, especially at night.

Blurred Vision

Blurred vision can be a sign of glaucoma, especially when vision was previously sharp.

Eye Pain and Redness

Eye pain and redness are common early warning signs of glaucoma.

If you have any of these symptoms, it can be important to see a Yucaipa, CA, optometrist on our team as soon as possible for a thorough examination. Glaucoma is usually diagnosed through a combination of tests, checking for optical nerve damage, and testing for visual field loss. Early diagnosis and treatment with medication or glaucoma surgery can help prevent or slow the progression of vision loss from glaucoma. We can help refer you to an eye surgeon if you need surgery.
